M.E., 1902, vol. xxiii., page 517-+ Ibid., 1902, vol. xxiii., page 685. 1 3 VOL. 1 111.-1902-1903. 174 RATCHET AXD IIAXD-MACHIXE DRILLS. USE OF RATCHET AXD OTHEE HAND-MACHINEDRILLS IN THE CLEVELAND MIXES. By WILLIAM CHARLTON, AssocR.S.M. Some twenty years ago, almost the whole of the Clevelandironstone was won by the chisel-pointed hand-drill, with a swelledend to add weight to the blow, and well known to all interestedin mining as the jumper-drill. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 8.—Hardy Katchet Drilling-machine. So established had this mode of drilling become that the oldpractical miner of that time naturally considered it necessaryfor working the Cleveland stone that the holes should have thetriangular shape A, and that it was only by his skill in drilling, with the jumper-drill, a hole with a flat-back or flat-front, flat-top, or flat-bottom, that the stone could be successfullymined. RATCHET AND HAND-MACHINE DRILLS. 17f> Experiments, however, had been made with rotary drills, which showed conclusively that a round hole could work thestone ; and the millions of holes which have since been drilled bythe compressed-air and electric drills, so successfully introducedby Mr. William Walker and Mr. A. L. Steavenson, are more thanample proof of their suitability.
