A rhyming epitaph in St. Marys, Gateshead, commemorates thepeaceable Thomas Arrowsmith, as Mr. Surtees calls him, though hemistakes the date upon his monument. MDCXXXII. Arms : As in 1625. ING CHARLES came through Newcastle on his wayto be crowned in Scotland. He was attended byLaud, bishop of London, White, bishop of Ely, theearls of Northumberland, Arundel, Pembroke, South-ampton, and Holland, and other persons of distinction.The royal party entered the town on the evening ofMonday, the 3rd June, amid the ringing of bells and the joyfulacclamations of the people, and were housed by the magistrates andcorporation. On the following evening his majesty dined with themayor, who was knighted for his loyalty.
