"Transportation of coal from and to Leasingthorne Colliery by rail was developed with the opening of mineral lines, in conjunction with the Darlington and Stockton Railway and the Clarence Railway. The latter was being constructed in 1825 with all the attendant difficulties of tolls, land acquisition, and the natural topography of a line which goes from West Durham to the East Coast. Provision was being made for sea coal transportation. Surface levels at Leasingthorne Colliery were 483.72 feet...."
