Queen Elizabeth School (QES), Kirkby Lonsdale

Queen Elizabeth School (QES) is located on Kendal Road in Kirkby Lonsdale. The school has about 1,200 students aged 11 to 18. The school converted to an Academy, with Lunesdale Learning Trust, in December 2010.

The school's history can be traced back to the 16th century. A scool was recorded in Kirkby Lonsdale in 1550. Then in 1591, a royal charter was granted for a free grammar school, which was originally located on Mill Brow. In 1840, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School moved to Springfield House on Biggins Lane. Girls were first admitted in 1905, and by 1930 there were 88 day pupils and 54 boarders. It became a non-selective comprehensive school in 1978 and continued to take in boarders until the late 1980s. It later became a Foundation School, then in 2010 became the first school in Cumbria to convert to academy status.
