Preston Colliery War Memorial

There is a war memorial located in the south-west side of Preston Cemetery. The memorial was commissioned by the owners of Preston Colliery; G.A. Ritson and Sons. Of 900 men employed at the colliery in 1914, 392 were enlisted for military service, with 65 losing their lives during the First World War.  The octagonal obelisk design was by Cackett and Burns Dick of Newcastle and made by local sculptor, D.W. Foster. The memorial was unveiled on the 15th June 1924 by Mr U.A. Ritson, Colliery Chairman, and dedicated by Rev. R.E. Holmes.[1] It was originally loacted at the junction of Queen Alexandra Road and Billy Mill Lane, but was moved to its present location in Preston Cemetery in 1964 because of the development of Billy Mill roundabout on the Coast Road. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
