Pillar Man by Nicolaus Widerberg


'Pillar Man' is a bronze sculpture by Norwegian artist Nico Widerberg situated off Sandyford Road, outside the Art Gallery at Northumbria University. It was commissioned as part of the City’s Hidden Rivers scheme and is located about 20 metres above the culverted (covered) Pandon Burn. The statue stands on bed of polished granite representing the hidden river. Standing at 6.5 metres, 'Pillar Man' is the largest bronze sculpture ever cast in Norway. it was unveiled on the 26th November 2004 by George Douglas, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle. The attended by the artist Nicolaus Widerberg, Tarald O. Brautaset, the Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Great Britain.[1]
