Pica village

Pica is a village in Cumbria, located about 3 miles north-east of Whitehaven and just over 1 mile south-east of the larger village of Distington. It is a former mining community; housing was built here, by Moresby Coal Co. Ltd., for miners employed at their nearby Oatlands Colliery, which opened in 1880. At it's peak, in 1921, 476 people were employed at the Oatlands Colliery (380 working below ground and 96 on the surface).[1] The colliery closed in April 1934, though there was later opencast mining nearby until c.1987. Pica forms part of Distington Civil Parish.
