Palisaded Settlement

Impression of a small palisaded settlementPalisaded settlements were small timber-fortified domestic sites dating to the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age (c. 550–440 BC). They were located primarily in northern England and southern Scotland. They were amongst the earliest type of defended settlements, featuring rock-cut trenches for wooden palisades, circular buildings, and stock enclosures. In later periods, timber was replaced by earthen defenses. Fewer than 200 surviving examples of palisaded settlement sites are known.
