Old Bridge over River Bela, Milnthorpe
The Old Bridge over the River Bela in Milnthorpe is a former road bridge, now a foot bridge. The stone bridge, with two segmental arches, was built in 1730 by Robert Robinson, mason and Robert Bindloss, waller.[1] It replaced an earlier bridge of 1542. The road that went over the old bridge closed in 1813, when the new Turnpike road was built, with a new bridge over the river, located about a ¼ mile east. The old bridge is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The old bridge straddles the civil parishes of Milnthope and Beetham (the river forming the parish boundary).
