Nos. 1-15, Gallowgate, Newcastle
Nos. 1-15, Gallowgate, Newcastle, are a row of shops and offices which were built in the late 19th Century. Nos 1 and 2, are on the corner of Gallowgate and Newgate Street and has a distinctive onion dome, and had once been the Bank of Liverpool & Martins (see photo below, from 1928). Prior to that, the North Eastern Banking Company opened a branch at Gallowgate here in 1900; then in 1914 the NEBC merged with the Bank of Liverpool, which soon after, acquired Martins bank in 1918. Nos. 1-2 Gallowgate are now Mops hairdressers (at 2024). The rear of the building abuts on to a section of the Medieval Town Wall and backs on to the churchyard of St Andrew's Church. Nos. 1-15, Gallowgate are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
