Meathop Sanatorium

Westmorland Consumption Sanatorium, an isolation hospital for poor people with tuberculosis, was located at Meathop, near Grange over Sands. It was opened as a convalescent home in 1891. It was extended in 1900 to be a sanatorium; the men’s block had places for 88 patients. A women’s block, built in 1909, had space for 59 patients. Wooden chalets were built for fresh-air treatment. The population of Meahop with Ulpha civil parish more than tripled as a result of the sanatorium - reaching a reaching peak of 328 in 1921.[1] The Sanatorium closed in 1964. The building later became known as Meathop Hospital, and used as a children's orthopaedic hospital. This closed in 1991 and the buildings were converted for residential use, now known as Meathop Grange
