Meathop
Meathop is a village in Cumbria, located about 3½ miles north-east of Grange over Sands and situated near the estury of the River Kent and Morcambe Bay. Meathop Hall here, dates from the 17th Century. In 1891, Westmorland Consumption Sanatorium (an isolation hospital for poor people with tuberculosis) at Meathop was opened. Later, it became later known as Meathop Hospital. This closed in 1991 and the buildings were converted for residential use, now known as Meathop Grange. Historically, Meathop, together with nearby Ulpha, and the wider area were a township in the ancient parish of Beetham. Today, the village is part of the Civil Parish of Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha and falls within the Westmorland and Furness Council area.
METHOP, with Ulpha, a township, in the parish of Beetham, union and ward of Kendal, county of Westmorland, 5½ miles (E.N.E.) from Cartmel; containing 87 inhabitants. It is bounded on the south by the estuary of the Kent.
