Low Beechburn
Low Beechburn is a hamlet in County Durham, located a short distance south of the town of Crook and north of Howden-le-Wear. It situated by Beechburn Beck (aka Crook Beck). There are cottages and farm(s) spread along The Hollow (road), accessed off the A689 road south of Crook.
Historically, before the expansion of the town of Crook, Beechburn / Low Beechburn referred to a much wider area. Low Beechburn Colliery (closed 1937), owned in the 1890s by Low Beechburn Coal Co. Ltd, was located near what is now Beechburn Industrial Estate, in the south of Crook. Thistle Flat Colliery and Friends Farm Colliery (closed 1930) were also located in the Low Beechburn area.
