Land Arch of the Medieval Tyne Bridge


 

Two sandstone land arches of the Medieval Tyne Bridge in Newcastle survive. Part of one is visible, the remainder obscured by later building. They are accessible from the cellar of the Watergate Buildings. The eastern part has 5 wide ribs; the western part, a triple-chamfered arch, has 4 closely-spaced ribs. The surviving arches are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and also Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
