Former Roa Island Hotel

The former Roa Island Hotel (originally called the Pier Hotel), on Roa Island, was built in the mid-late 19th century. At that time, there was a railway station on the island, with the causeway built in 1847, to carry a branch line of the Furness Railway. The railway connected passengers with steam ship services, leaving from piers on Roa Island, to Fleetwood and later Belfast. The station closed in 1936. The hotel and bar, at that time owned by Bass, was put on sale in c.2001, and is now a private residence. The side wing of the building is said to be converted from a former boathouse. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
