First Railway Station, Barnard Castle
The first railway station in Barnard Castle was opened on the 9th July, 1856, by the Darlington and Barnard Castle Railway. It was the terminus of a line. However, the station was closed to passengers in 1862, when a larger second station for Barnard Castle, was opened on the South Durham & Lancashire Railway line.[1] In 1863, the station portico was removed and then reconstructed in Valley Gardens in Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The first station continued to be used for freight traffic until 1965. Some of the first station buildings still stand - now converted to 3 houses (nos. 7, 8 & 9, Strathmore Court) which are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.[2]
