Elswick is a township in the parish of St. John and constitutes the western portion of the city along the banks of the river Tyne, and comprises the extensive works of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. The area is 807 acres; the population in 1871 was 27,801, in 1881, 34,642, and in 1891, 51,608.
