East Range, Cathedral Cloister


The East range of The Cloister at Durham Cathedral comprises of the Chaper House, slype (a covered way between the cathedral transept and the Chapter House), and prison. Buildings begun in the 11th century continued and altered in the 12th and 13th centuries. A room above the slype was added in the 15th century. The Chapter House was mostly rebuilt 1895-1896 by C. Hodgson Fowler, in memory of Bishop Lightfoot. The East range of The Cloisters are Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
