Dormitory of former Priory of St Mary (ruins), Carlisle
The ruins of the Dormitory (or 'dorter') stand beside Carlisle Cathedral. The dormitory, built for the Priory of St Mary, dates from the 13th century. This former 2-storey building, stands one metre below the present ground level. In the past the building joined the south transept of the Cathedral and joined The Fratry at right angles to form the east range of the Cloisters. The slype arches which continued the wall to link with the Cathedral on the north were removed in 1809 as part of the new layout of the Cathedral grounds.[1] The ruins of the Dormitory of the former Priory of St Mary are Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
