Dean Tait's Lane

Dean Tait's Lane is a narrow passage running from West Walls (street) through to Paternoster Row and Abbey Street in Carlisle. At the north end of Dean Tait's Lane is an archway, which is adjacent to Abbey Gatehouse, the gateway to the Cathedral Precinct.

Archibald Campbell Tait was Dean of Carlisle Cathedral from 1849-1856 and later went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Dean Tait lost 5 children to smallpox in 1856; there is a memorial window in St Wilfrid's Chapel within Carlisle Cathedral and there is a monument to Dean Tait's children at St Michael's Church in Stanwix.
