Cumberland Infirmary

Cumberland Infirmary is located off Newtown Road in Carlisle, just over ½ mile east of the city centre. It is part of the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital opened in 1832 and the Old Cumberland Infirmary building is still part of the hospital complex. A large tower block extension was opened in 1975. Todays modern hospital building was officially opened by PM, Tony Blair, on the 16th of June 2000. It was one of the first NHS hospitals to be procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract in 1997. The new hospital consolidated three previous hospitals; the old Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle City General Hospital and Carlisle City Maternity Hospital.
