Church of St. James, Shilbottle
St. James' is the parish church in Shilbottle. The present church was built in 1884 on the site of a Norman church, and was designed by Newcastle architect W.S. Hicks. The church incorporates elements of the earlier building, including it's Norman doorway, font, chancel arch, and preserved a small early window moulding on the outer north wall. The chancel and sanctuary contain fine wood carvings and stained glass designed by R.G. Hatton. The church is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England. The parish magazine is named 'Scallop Shell' and the shell is included in glasswork in the church (Medieval Christians making a pilgrimage to see Saint James' shrine often wore a scallop shell).
