Church of St James, Castle Eden

St James' Church in The Village, Castle Eden is dated 1764, built on the site of an earlier church. The former parish church incorporates medieval masonry in it's west end and tower. Aisles were added in c.1800; the chancel was rebuilt and organ chamber added in 1896. The church closed for worship in 2016 and Castle Eden is now situated in the Church of England parish of Blackhall with Castle Eden and Hesleden, and the parish church is St Andrew’s on Hesleden Road in Blackhall. St James' Church is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. It was possibly designed by William Newton and is thought to be first complete Gothick Revival style church in the North of England.
