Cartmel Grange Care Home
Cartmel Grange is located on Allithwaite Road in Grange-over-Sands. It was originally built in 1914 as a convalescent home for the Working Men's Club and Institute Union, for union members, particulary miners, who were injured or ailing. It was one of a number of convalescent homes established in the area in the early 20th century (see also Hazelwood Court); the salty sea air was believed to be beneficial, especially for tuberculosis sufferers. An additional storey was added to the building (see early photo). The building was converted to a private residential nursing home in 1991, but retains many of the original architectural features. In the grounds of Cartmel Grange are a listed War Memorial.
