Burnopfield Community Centre

Burnopfield Community Centre is located on Syke Road in Buropfield. The Jacobean style building dates from 1893 and was originally built as Leazes Board School. The school opened in 1894 for the education of children from aged 5 to 14; it had a separate entrance for girls and infants. Many board schools were built after the 1870 Education Act and Tanfield School Board was formed in 1890, building schools in several villages in the area, including this one. The building became a Community Centre in 1968, coming under the management of the Burnopfield Community Association, which was founded in 1966. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The former caretaker's house and also the walls around the school are separately Grade II listed.
