Bronze Age Cairns
Dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2000 - 700 BC), round cairns are prehistoric stone mounds built to house one or more burials. These graves were often placed in stone-lined boxes known as cists, and some mounds have an encircling ditch. Cairns are usually positioned on high, prominent ground, they remain a striking part of our landscape today. Most are located in upland areas, whist earthen barrows are more common in lowland areas. The diverse designs of cairns gave an insight into the complex social structures and spiritual beliefs of early communities.
