Bloemfontein Primary School

Bloemfontein Primary School is located on Middles Road in The Middles, in Stanley, County Durham. It has about 150 pupils aged 2 to 11. The school converted to an Academy in September 2018, under the Stanley Learning Partnership. It originally opened in 1910 as Bloemfontein School. The school name derived from the area; when houses were built here at the start of the 20th century soon after the end of the Boer War, the area was named Bloemfontein after the battle there, in what is now South Africa. There is a plaque on the wall of the school dedicated to local miner, Michael Heaviside, who served as a stretcher bearer in the Boer War, and later awared the Victoria Cross in the First World War.
