Blackwell House

Blackwell House is located off Durdar Road in Blackwell, Carlisle. The farmhouse dates from the 1730s, and possibly earlier. The house was used as headquarters by both Rebels and Crown during the two sieges of Carlisle in 1745, in the Jacobite Rising.[1]  Farm buildings to the north of the farmhouse formed part of a block around an enclosed rectangular yard. When Carlisle Racecourse moved from The Swifts in Carlisle to Blackwell in 1904, the block was converted to stables, and used by Carlisle Racecourse for about 100 years. Redundant, the stables to the north were demolished in 2017. There have been significant new residential developments on the land around the house in the early 2020s. Blackwell House and the remaining stables are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.

Prince Charles Edward Stuart stayed here 10 November 1745 and the Duke of Cumberland, 21-31 December 1745. (Civic Trust plaque)
