Belsfield Hotel, Bowness-on-Windermere

Belsfield Hotel is located on Kendal Road in Bowness-on-Windermere and overlooks Windermere (lake). It was originally built in c.1845 as a summer residence for Baroness Catherine Von Sternberg. In 1869, the mansion was purchased by the iron and steel magnate Henry Schneider. He lived here whilst he was chairman of the Barrow Steelworks. In the mornings he left Belsfield for his steam yacht SL Esperance, on which he had breakfast whilst sailing across the lake to Lakeside, where he took the train to Barrow-in-Furness. Shneider died in 1887 and Belsfield was converted to a hotel in 1892. The hotel is an good example of Victorian Italianate-style architecture and is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
