Beggar Lane & footbridge, Morpeth

Beggar Lane in Morpeth is a footpath which runs from Buller's Green / Newgate Street, through to Cottingwood Lane. Cotting Burn is a stream, which runs between the back gardens of the two streets, and there is an 18th century footbridge, which carries Beggar Lane over the Burn. The bridge has a low segmental arch and is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Today, the lane is a poular short-cut, originally it is said that Beggar Lane was used to divert itinerants / beggars away from the town centre.
