Beckfoot Roman Fort

The site of Beckfoot Roman Fort (Bibra) is located on the Solway Firth coast, about ½ mile south of the hamlet of Beckford. It formed part of the Roman Cumbrian coastal defences.

Whilst now only visible as cropmarks in aerial photography, excavations confirm that building and wall foundations remain well-preserved underground. The fort measures roughly 123m by 84m, and enclosed by a thick defensive wall featuring interval towers, corner turrets, and four external ditches. It includes four main entrances with guard chambers and a complex interior containing a headquarters, commandant's house, hospital, barracks, and workshops. The site is a Scheduled Monument and falls within the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
