Annfield Plain at War

The War Memorial at Annfield Plain is inscribed with the names of 263 local men who lost their lives in the First World War and the 66 people who died in the Second World War. There is also a separate memorial on Loud Hill, where Pilot Officer Joyce met his death in 1918, and also in remembrance of his son who died in the Second World War.

During the First World War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England. These have been made available by Newcastle Libraries.
