Aldin Grange

Aldin Grange is a hamlet in County Durham, situated by the River Browney and a short distance east of Bearpark and about a mile west of Durham. Old documents refer to it under the name of Aldyngrige. The manor of Aldin Grange belonged to the Bishops of Durham until the 12th century, after which it passed to the monks of Baxter Wood and later Finchale Priory. Small scale coal mining is recorded here in the mid-15th century. Aldin Grange Bridge here dates from the 15th century. From the 17th century, the manor belonged to a series of farming families, before passing to the Cochrane family, owners of New Brancepeth Colliery in the 19th century. Aldin Grange Hall, the old manor house, was divided up into a number of smaller cottages after the Cochrane family moved to Eshwood Hall in 1874. Today, in addition to cottages along Auton Stile (road), there is Aldin Grange Farm and farmshop and Aldin Grange Lakes fishery. Away from the main hamlet, at the east end of Bearpark is Aldin Grange House and Aldin Grange Terrace, which is a surviving example of the housing built (in c.1880) for miners and their families at Bearpark Colliery. In 1883, Aldon Grange Station was opened by the North Eastern Railway (renamed Bearpark Station in 1927); the station closed in 1966.
