Abbot Hall, Kents Bank

Abbot Hall is located on Kirkhead Road in Kents Bank, Grange-over-Sands. Originally built as a house in the 1840s, by Webster of Kendal, it was extended in c.1870. It stands on the site of a medieval manor, dating from about 1160. It is said that the name derives from it being a resting place from where the Abbot of Furness broke his journey when crossing the sands of Morecambe Bay.[1] In c.1900, the building was Abbot Hall Preparatory School for boys. Later it became a hotel then Methodist holiday centre, but has been unused since 2018. Planning permission was granted to Abhall Limited in 2024 to restore Abbot Hall into a home and to offer holiday accommodation on the grounds.[2] The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
