William Pit Disaster, 1947


The William Pit Disaster, in Whitehaven, occured on the 15th August 1947. Overall, 104 miners died; 14 were killed by the blast itself. Ninety miners survived the initial explosion, only to be overcome later by the poisonous 'afterdamp' (carbon monoxide) created by the blast, before they could be rescued.
