Whitchester (near Haltwhistle)
Whitchester is a hamlet in Northumberland, located by the River South Tyne, about ½ mile east of Haltwhistle and ½ mile west of Melkridge. The road through Whitchester is a former Turnpike road, as evidenced by the Old Toll Bar Cottage here; it remained the main road until the A69 bypass was built. the road is now part of National Cycle Route 72. Whitchester Farm here is a working dairy and sheep farm; Whitchester Farm Cottage is available as a holiday let. Whitchester was the site of a medieval village[1]. Today, Whitchester is part of Melkridge Civil Parish.
