Aug. 16 .-- Thomas Clare, a private in the 2d Staffordshire militia, was executed according to his sentence, at the Westgate, Newcastle , for the murder of William Todd. He was much agitated at the awful preparation for eternity, so much so, that he appeared nearly dead before his suspension; he made no public confession of his guilt. The murder was committed August 19, 1804, during the time the regiment was encamped near Hartley.
