War Memorial, Wheatley Hill
The War Memorial Cross is located in the cemetery grounds in Wheatley Hill, by the Wheatley Hill Heritage Centre. At a public meeting held in October 1935, residents of Wheatley Hill decided to spend the war memorial fund on a memorial cross, to be erected in the Miners’ Welfare Park. The Memorial was erected to commemorate 185 local servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. It was later also dedicated to 39 local people killed in the Second World War, and one solder killed in the Korean War (1950-1953). The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. After being subjected to vandalism, the memorial was restored and relocated in 2005. A memorial clock had also built, now located in the Heritage Centre.
