War Memorial, Smith's Dock Park


The war memorial in Smith's Dock Park in Normanby was built by the Smith's Dock Company to commemorate 140 employees who lost their lives in the First World War. It was one of three identical memorials built for by the Smith’s Dock Company to honour its fallen employees (the other 2 being in West Park, North Shields and Harton Recreation Park, South Shields). The memorial in Normaby was unveiled on the 16th of September 1922, by Vice-Admiral Sir Laurence E Power. Later, the memorial was further dedicated to 39 employees who died in the Second World War. The memorial was refurbished by the Friends of Smith's Dock Park War Memorial in July 2011.[1] The memorial is Grade II listed.
