Thornton

Thornton is a hamlet in Northumberland, located about 4 miles south-west of Berwick upon Tweed. The hamlet of Thornton Mains is located a short distance to the East, and Thornton Cottages to the North-West. There are earthwork remains of the deserted medieval village of Thorntonpark, located near Thornton Cottages, which was largely abandoned when the modern farm was built at Thornton Park, away from the old village.[1] There was once a towerhouse and barmkin here (partly destroyed in 1513).[2] Historically, Thornton was a township in the ancient parish of Norham; which in the 19th century, included 3 farms and a colliery, belonging to Lord Crewe's trustees.[3] Today, Thornton is part of Shoreswood Civil Paish.
