The Royal Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale

The Royal Hotel & Restaurant in Kirkby Lonsdale is located on Main Street (No. 30) on the junction with New Road. The 3 storey inn dates from the mid 18th century, incorporating a 17th century house behind, with alterations in the 19th century. The Royal Hotel is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.

Part of the hotel building was formerly a private residence called Jackson Hall. This became the Rose and Crown Inn, but New Road was driven across the northern part of the property after a fire in December 1820. Four young women perished in the fire and are commemorated by an Obelisk in St Mary's churchyard. On 24th July 1840, the Dowager Queen Adelaide, widow of King William IV, visited Kirkby Lonsdale and stayed here in the hotel, which was renamed The Royal Hotel for the visit.
