The Orion, Westerhope

The Orion is a bingo hall and former cinema on Stamfordham Road in Westerhope. The building was originally an independent cinema known as "The Picture Palace". It opened on the 14th of August 1912, under the ownership of Samuel R. Piper, former deputy at North Walbottle Colliery.[1] The cinema seated 450 people. Later it was known as the "Westerhope Picture House", and in 1941, it was re-named as the "Orion Cinema". The Orion Cinema closed in January 1970.[2] The building was converted for use as a bingo hall. The bingo hall had fallen into disrepair before being taken over by the Hay family in late 2016.[3] It was refurbished in 2017.
