The Old Rectory, Houghton-le-Spring
The Old Rectory is a community hub, located in Houghton Park, off the Broadway in Houghton-le-Spring. This former rectory to St Michael's Church dates from the early 17th century. The building was altered in the 18th (1794 inscribed on rainwater head), 19th and 20th centuries. In 1949, the gardens surrounding the rectory became a public park after being gifted to the people of Houghton-le-Spring. For many years, the building was used as council offices; acting as Area Offices of Sunderland District Council and for Social Services. Since 2017, the Old Rectory has been maintained by Acumen Community Buildings, a charity using the building to provide a hub for community groups and social entrepreneurs. This is a Grade II* listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
