The Castle (former coaching inn)

The Castle is a house in the village of Whittingham (on the market in 2023, described as a "six bedroom period home"). This is the former Castle Inn public house, built in c.1830. It had originally been a much larger coaching inn, incorporating the house next door (Castle Farm). In the 19th century, the Newcastle-Edinburgh mail coach, known as "The Wellington", stopped each day here at the Castle Inn and the horses were changed at 11am going north and 5pm going south. The Castle Inn closed in the 1990s and was later converted for residential use. The Castle is a Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
