Stocksfield Station
Stocksfield Station was originally opened on the 9th March, 1835, by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway company. It was the arrival of the railway which was a major factor in the rapid growth of Stocksfield. The station now operates unmaned and most of the original station buildings are no longer extant. The Old Station Masters House c.1852, is now a private residence. Interestingly, during the height of the 'Cold War,' a railway control building was built at Stocksfield in c.1954. This was intended to keep the regional railway operational in the event of Newcastle being hit by a nuclear bomb. This control building was demolished by 1980, after threat of war had subsided.[1]
