St Mary's Church, Low Newton

St Mary's Church in Low Newton-by-the-Sea (aka Newton Mission Church) is a surviving example of a "tin tabernacle" mission church, built from a pre-fabricated kit, in the late 19th century. The corrugated-iron building was erected as a Mission Room for the local farming and fishing community and also originally served as a village hall. Permission to license the building for Holy Communion and Baptisms was granted in 1902. The building was officially dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin by the Bishop of Newcastle in 1998 - in honor a 14th-century chapel in the area. It was used as a parish hall, until the Women’s Institute Hall was bult, after the First World War. However, after that closed in 1996, the church once again is used for village meetings, Parish Council, exhibitions and concerts.
