St Bede's School, Lanchester

St Bede's Catholic School and Sixth Form College is located on Consett Road on the northern edge of Lanchester in County Durham. The school has about 1,400 students aged 11 to 18. The school was originally called St. Bede’s Grammar Technical School, which opened to 420 students on the 9th September 1964. At that time, many of the high-school aged students were transferred from an earlier school (the Endowed Parochial School of 1875), which had been located on the corner of Newbiggin Lane and Front Street. This old school building on Front Street became Lanchester Community Centre in c.1963. The current school's new sixth-form centre was opened in November 2007. St Bede's Catholic School was a voluntary aided school until June 2012, when the school converted to an academy, in association with Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust.
