Sipton Mine
This was a lead mine at Sipton, located on the Sipton Vein, about 1km north of St. Peter's Mine in Spartylea. It was situated near the confluence of Sipton Burn and the River East Allen. The Sipton Vein was worked for lead here by W.H. Beaumont Co. during the early to mid 1860s, and again by the Weardale Lead Company from the 1920s. In 1921, there were 65 people working at the mine (41 below ground, 24 on the surface).[1] Mining continued until 1946, with the shaft employing the last hydraulic hoist engine used in the North Pennines.[2] Most of the mine buildings were demolished in 1950; a few remain, including the old Powder House. Later the mine was reopened and worked for fluorspa.
