Shildon Lodge Colliery was located to the west of Shildon in County Durham. Engine Pit was sunk in c.1830 on land owned by Robert Surtees. In the mid 19th century, the colliery had come under the ownership of Bolckow, Vaughan & Co. Ltd. A second pit, Furnace Pit, was sunk in November 1864. In 1902 there were 610 people working in the colliery (491 working below ground, 119 working on the surface).[1] The colliery closed in 1937.
