Royal Port of Barrow
The Royal Port of Barrow is an enclosed dock system in Barrow-in-Furness, comprising four docks:
The port was developed between 1867 and 1881 to handle iron ore shipments (connected with the Furness Railway) and to build ships. Shipbuilding here increased dramatically after the Barrow Shipbuilding Company was incorporated in 1871, and later acquired by Vickers in 1897. Over time the port became important in the production of naval vessels, including submarines, the building of which continues here today with BAE Systems.
